Due to a defect being discovered on one of the CPUs, causing it to consistently underclock and report itself as less than half of its proper operating speed, I will be replacing the CPUs on both servers in the next couple of days as soon as the parts arrive. Downtime should be minimal, time enough to go offline, do the swaps, and reboot.

The new CPUs will have an added benefit of only needing 45 watts of power each, rather than the 85 watts they each use now. So it's a win-win all around for expenses and the environment too.

I'll be doing an update to Fedora 11 prior to shutting down for the swaps as well. .........................

The CPU and OS upgrades are done.

However, this has not resolved the issue and it now appears as though both systems need BIOS updates which are no longer possible to acquire. So it's off to look for new motherboards now. Not what I wanted to be spending a bunch of time on, but discontinued hardware from defunct companies will do that. .........................

Motherboards are here, so once I've had time to ingest a meal, I'll be taking Crondonia down first, swapping it, getting it back online then hitting Boralis after. At least that way the whole place isn't completely offline for as long as this is going to take. .........................

Alright, after having taken much longer than expected, the board updates are complete and everything is back in shape.

Blame a stray udev rule for network ports for gumming things up. Apparently both systems decided to randomly hang on to a bad MAC address which had to be cleared out before the network interfaces would operate. The hardware itself has actually been back up for a few hours now :) .........................
